A short
film that combines cassette tapes that were recorded by the artist’s family in 1979 with video recordings of Brazil in 2022. The blending of such
elements is a way for Páscoa to dialogue with their late grandparents all while finding
cultural elements that connect them. The tapes were correspondence between the artist’s grandparents and their mother, while she lived with a host family in the US at the age of 15.
The film also explores how expats, Páscoa included, often romanticize their home country, and at times, even overlook the political landscape and socio-cultural dynamics that make it a complicated decision to go back.
Besides being a reflection on the artists’ relationship to their country of origin, this is a work of auto-fiction that tensions one’s agency to fabricate storylines using vernacular arquives (in this case their grandparents’ tapes)
